Practical, route-aware advice

Month-by-month clothing advice for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, houseboats and winter snow trips.

Spring: March to May

Carry light thermals, fleece, a rain-resistant shell and comfortable waterproof shoes. Srinagar afternoons may feel mild while Gulmarg or Sonamarg remains cold. April blossom photographs do not show the evening chill.

Summer: June to August

Use breathable day clothes, sun protection and a light jacket for evenings, mountain excursions and air-conditioned transport. A compact rain layer is useful. Dress respectfully at shrines and rural communities.

Autumn: September to November

Temperatures fall quickly after sunset. Add a warm fleece or insulated jacket, wool socks and a warm cap by late autumn. Houseboat decks and early Shikara rides feel colder than central-city streets.

Winter: December to February

Bring thermal base layers, fleece, insulated jacket, waterproof outer layer, warm cap, gloves, wool socks and waterproof shoes with grip. Jeans alone become cold and slow to dry. Confirm hotel and houseboat heating rather than assuming room temperature.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need waterproof shoes?

They are strongly useful for winter snow and spring slush; in dry summer, good walking shoes may be enough.

Is one heavy coat better than layers?

Layers are more flexible across warm vehicles, sunny afternoons and cold mountain stops.

What should I wear at religious sites?

Cover shoulders and knees, carry a light scarf where appropriate and follow footwear/head-cover instructions.

Can I rent snow clothing in Gulmarg?

Rental is often available, but quality and size vary. Bring fitted base layers, socks and gloves.
